Book: Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges
Reviewed by Cindy Hunter on March 26, 2008
You may remember sharing secrets as a kid and saying, “I’ll tell you mine if you’ll tell me yours.” In Respectable Sins, Jerry Bridges doesn’t necessarily tell us his, but he certainly tells us ours. As well crafted as The Pursuit of Holiness, Bridges’ newest book peeks into our hearts as it leads forward into newfound revelations.
While most of us do not permit blatant sin in our lives, we do allow the presence of more subtle sins, the ones that are so prevalent in our society as to no longer be considered sin. We may not admit to pride being a stumbling block, but there exists the subtle form of pride described as moral self-righteousness or moral superiority. It is an insidious tool used by Satan to poison the heart of the committed Christian. Perhaps that is not an area of sin for you. Bridges also shows us how competitiveness and sarcasm are sinful. Reminiscent of Galatians 5:21 where the unlisted works of the flesh are gathered together in the phrase “and the like,” Respectable Sins brings to light those sins we do not see within ourselves.
If you are truly seeking the Lord and genuinely desire to strive for Christlikeness, this is the book for you. Come with an honest, humble heart and give God permission to correct and teach. You will not regret giving up your respectable sins.
