Leaving A Trail
So the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered and said, "It is the young Moabite woman who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. And she said, 'Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.' So she came and has continued from morning until now, though she rested a little... more »» in the house."

Then Boaz said to Ruth, "You will listen, my daughter, will you not? Do not go to glean in another field, nor go from here, but stay close by my young women. Let your eyes be on the field which they reap, and go after them. Have I not commanded the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn." Ruth 2:6-9


"Mommy, look, jellybeans!" exclaimed Nathan one Easter. We had just begun a family ritual that year to help a small adventurous boy find his basket. A trail of jellybeans began at the foot of his bed leading in a zigzag pattern throughout the house, until it ended where his basket was hidden. We heard the shuffle of slippers moving down the hall and the plunk of jellybeans dropping into his tin pail. Nathan was learning through the sweet nuggets that life's journey is a trail lined with valuable markers that can lead to great rewards.

Nathan's bountiful trail reminds me of another—the trail of grain a young widow followed through a field in ancient Bethlehem. In the book of Ruth we see the main character has joined her mother-in-law, Naomi, on a journey to the Promised Land. Upon their arrival she goes to work in the barley fields of a local landowner named Boaz. As she gathers food following a trail of grain, we see God's providential hand in Ruth and Naomi's lives. God is at work behind the scenes, weaving together the lives of the main characters in this ancient love story.

God leaves a steady trail of good things for all who diligently seek Him. These markers faithfully lead all the way to His heart and home. Your heavenly Father sees your needs, as He saw Ruth's needs, and desires your company.

Look beyond what you can see with your eyes to the unseen hand of God leaving bundles of goodness for you.

2. What are some difficult circumstances you have experienced? How has God worked them out for your good?
3. Think about a time when someone came to your rescue in a difficult situation, how did you thank them?
